Clough had proven to become a miracle worker at Derby County since arriving and once again enjoyed a decent campaign at the club during the 1970- 71 season as his team finished off in ninth place in the top flight. They reached the fourth round of the league cp, however suffered defeat against Coventry City which was followed by an exit in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Derby County enjoyed one of their finest ever seasons during the 1971 – 1972 campaign as they were terrific in the top flight and were crowned a league champions for the first time in the clubs history. Kevin Hector was in incredible form for the club, a player who would go on to become their most played ever player.
The following season was Brian Clough’s last in charge at the club and it was pretty decent again, a seventh position finish and finishing in the quarter finals of the FA Cup was seen as a good season for the club. They suffered defeat against Leeds United in the last eight of the competition.
Derby improved during the 1973 – 1974 campaign and finished it off in a strong third position. Dave Mackay was installed as the new manager of the club. Derby repeated their amazing performance of the 1972 league season as they won the league title once again at the end of the 1974 – 1975 season.
